How to Run A Successful Small Creative Business....
March 3rd, 2008
The course on xtrain I think I learned the most from is Bryan Peterson's on How to run a graphic design business. When I first applied to work for this company, I went to the website and saw his faculty profile. It made a huge impression on me because he actually wrote 2 of my textbooks! "Design Basics for Creative Results" was being used in both of my design classes at the time and my professors spoke very highly of it as a reference. Aside from the shock of mere coincidence, I was pretty impressed. So when he taught a class on how to run a design company, it was information that was right up my ally. No one really outlines for you how the business works. I mean, I've learned plenty about how to assemble a layout, but what next? It's weird because many of my friends are art students looking to go into the design field too, and when we discuss our portfolios I feel like I have a leg up. They can speculate about what's important to an employer but I know for a fact, straight from the source. I don't know if I'll ever work as a freelance graphic designer, but the ways he discusses the business it truly gives me an idea about how it all works. I know how to format my portfolio now, and what really counts when it comes to a job interview. Thank you so much for this course.
